HEATING & COOLING

The weather up here is just beautiful. In the summetime, temps will read up into the 90s. Monsoon season is amazing. I love to watch the thunderheads roll across the sky. After the rain, you can smell Juniper trees and blue sage for miles. During the spring and autumn months, the weather is absolutely perfect. Lots of sun and the temps range from the low 60s to the high 70s.  When fall approaches we know it's time to get the firewood ready as it gets cold enough here to snow from time to time.

Because Arizona is normally a very dry climate, you won't have to worry about humidity unless it is between the months of late June until about the end of August. This is our monsoon season. While it will get humid during this time, it is nothing like the humidity you will find in other parts of the country which is what makes using a "swamp cooler" (aka evaporative cooler) such a great idea. They don't use nearly as much power as a standard air conditioner, which in turn means less strain on the solar power supply yet it still makes the inside of the house nice and cold. I will never go back to an air conditioner again!

For the colder months, there's a cozy woodstove as well a new propane wall heater to get you through until warm weather comes again. I like the fact that this woodstove has a flat surface in which to make coffee or hot chocolate on. Other times after getting a good fire going, we like to put a cast iron pot filled with water and essential oils on top of the woodstove. When the water begins to heat up, it adds moisture to the dry air while adding a nice fragrance to the house.

Hot water and cooking needs are met with propane. We usually get the tank filled every 4 or 5 months. This will of course depend on how many you have in your household. There are two of us currently... this should give you an idea of how long it takes us to go through our propane supply before needing it to be filled again.

Our local propane company is Graves Propane in St Johns.

I guess not EVERYONE likes a good monsoon!
